IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL TECHNOLOGY USERS:   In 2007, Daylight Saving Time changed for the U.S. and Canada . As part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, Daylight Saving Time (DST) has been extended by four weeks.  DST starts on the second Sunday in March (9th) and will end on the first Sunday in November (2nd).

Last year instructions were sent and posted about how to prepare for this change. If your system can not or has not been updated, then you need to make sure that you manually change the time on your systems on the following dates at 2:00 AM to be on the correct time:

  • Sunday, March 9
  • Sunday, April 6
  • Sunday, October 29
  • Sunday, November 2

If you are using the calendar feature within Microsoft Exchange (Outlook), there is an additional patch required to adjust for the new DST dates.  These instructions are also included below. If you do not apply this pat ch, appointments sent to you by others may offset in your calendar by 1 hour.

Below
is a review of the information that we provided to the District last year. You should not have to perform any of these functions on a system that was updated last year. If you need to update a system that was not updated last year, please review the information provided below.

We have also included Quick Reference Guides which provide step-by-step instructions on how to update your computer.  These can be viewed/printed by clicking on the appropriate link below:

Installing Office Update 11.3.4 for Entourage 2004 (Note: Later updates may require you to upgrade in steps because a previous service release will have to be installed first. Information about this can be found on the Microsoft Support Web Site.)
http://techsupport.lausd.net/acrobat/Installing_Office_Update_11.3.4_for_Entourage_2004.pdf

For more detailed information on this change please review the information under the section labeled: “DST - THE TIME TO CHANGE IS A CHANGIN' below.

Microsoft Windows OS
Customers using Windows XP and Outlook should install the DST updates available from Microsoft.  Microsoft has published an update wizard on its web site: http://www.microsoft.com/dst2007 .  Follow the instructions to update the OS.

Hint: Since you are performing this update yourself, you should select the HOME USER option.  Please refer to the Microsoft Daylight Saving Time Update Guide Companion for LAUSD quick reference guide for detailed instructions.

Once the OS has been updated, it will also give you the option to update other applications.  Specifically, you want to update your version of Outlook. Select your version and follow the instructions and recommendations.

Apple Macintosh OS
Last year
, Apple released information on the DST updates for their supported and non-suported OS. This information can be found on the Apple Support site: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305056

A reminder that if you are an Entourage 2004 user, you will need to apply the Office 11.3.3 update available from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx?pid=download&location=/mac/download/Office2004/Office2004_1133.xml

Reminder: The OS updates are only available for Windows XP and Macintosh OS 10.3.9/10.4.8.  If you have any other OS besides these, you will need to make manual changes to ensure your machine stays on the correct time during the first few weeks on the new DST period as well as the last few weeks of the new DST period.  Click on the below Quick Reference Guide for your respective operating system to manually adjust your computer clock.

Updating Time Manually for Windows 2000 Computers

Updating Time Manually for OS X 10.1.x and 10.2.x Computers
http://techsupport.lausd.net/acrobat/DST_Manual_Time_Change_Mac_OSX.pdf

Helpful Tip: If you are sending out meeting invitations that occur during this time period, you should include the start time in the body of the invitation.  By doing so, participants will know the correct time of the meeting without relying on whether the time has or has not been adjusted for DST.  Please share this information with anyone who attends your meetings to ensure they adjust their clocks and calendars appropriately.

(Reposted from last year)

DST - THE TIME TO CHANGE IS A CHANGIN’: Important - Daylight Saving Time changes for the U.S. and Canada in 2007. As part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, Daylight Saving Time (DST) has been extended by four weeks. DST dates in the United States will start three weeks earlier (2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday in March) and will end one week later (2:00 A.M. on the first Sunday in November).

Over the past few years, computer operating systems, like Windows and Mac OS, have had technology built in to automatically change the computer’s clock to conform to DST. This occurs because the OS contains the dates of the beginning and ending of DST for the local time zone. Because of this change in DST period, the OS will not change the clock on the new start and end dates unless the data in the OS is updated.

Both Microsoft and Apple have provided patches to change these dates on their CURRENT operating systems: Microsoft Windows XP; Microsoft Windows Server 2003, and Apple Mac OS 10.4. To ensure that your OS receives these patches, make sure that you follow the instructions for your installed operating system below:

  • For Mac OSX Version 10.4, you must use the SOFTWARE UPDATE applet located on the Apple menu in the FINDER tool bar. If your system is running 10.4.6 or later, your OS has the patch applied.
  • For Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, Microsoft has released OS Patch KB928388. At this time, this patch is available as an OPTIONAL download via Windows Update (or the newer, more extensive Microsoft Update). (Note: This patch has been set as optional because a tool designed to correct appointments setup in MS Outlook 2000 – 2003 is pending. Once this tool has been made available, Microsoft expects to raise the patch level to high or critical which will make it available in the Automatic Update component in the Windows OS.)

Here are some important notes to keep in mind as it relates to these updates, the use of MS Outlook for Windows or Entourage for Mac, and the Microsoft Automatic Update feature:

  • LAUSD currently does not provide support for older operating systems. This includes any Mac OS before 10.1, and any Windows OS before Windows 2000. If you are still using these operating systems, and you desire support from LAUSD ITD for your computer, it is suggested that you upgrade these systems to the latest operating systems from either Microsoft or Apple.
  • Even though Windows 2000 and Windows 2000 Server are still supported by LAUSD, Microsoft has ended its mainstream support for these operating systems. This means no hotfix or patch will be available. There are other manual methods available and listed on the Microsoft web site: (Note: Use of these manual methods is done at the risk of the user and support by LAUSD can not be offered.)
  • Apple has indicated that if your system is not running their current OS version, that you upgrade your system to Mac OS X 10.4.6 or later. No plans for a hotfix, patch, or manual fix for their older operating systems have been announced.
  • If you choose to run an older operating system, or one that does not have a fix, another option for you would be to manually change the system’s clock on the date of the start and end of DST occur. Please note: In order to prevent the clock from changing time on the old dates, make sure that turn off the option to have to computer adjust for DST.
  • In October, 2006, ITD announced that users of many District supported applications, such as BTS, should not upgrade to Internet Explorer 7. This is because many applications have not been tested to run on this browser. As a suggestion to keep IE7 from being automatically installed, it was recommended to change your Automatic Update setting to prompt you before installing. Therefore, when KB928388 becomes available automatically, you many need to manually accept it. Please accept the KB928388 update only if you not running any version of Outlook or have already obtained the update tool for Outlook provided by Microsoft.
  • Outlook 2000-2003 users: As mentioned above, do not install KB928388 until further notice. This is due to the fact that Outlook versions prior to Outlook 2007 do not stamp single-instance appointments with the necessary time zone property. For these items, the Outlook Time Zone Update Tool will add the time zone property and adjust them by an hour (if they are within the delta periods of 3/11-4/1 or 10/28-11/4). This update tool will not be available until February, 2007.
  • Microsoft has released Office 11.3.3 Update recently which will make Entourage 2004 aware of DST 2007 changes. To download this update, select CHECK FOR UPDATES from the HELP menu in Entourage. For more information on the Office 11.3.3 Update or to download the update manually, go to the following page on Microsoft’s page: Office 11.3.3
