Updating Your Software
Keep Your Software Current
Over the past couple years we have seen an increasing amount of issues relating to vulnerabilities of computer software. ITD recommends that you keep ALL software on your computers updated. Information on how to do this can be found on this page. You will find links to vendor update pages for most Operating Systems and Applications used at LAUSD. This include SERVICE PACKS. (PLEASE NOTE: When downloading large updates and service packs from these sites, be careful to download these during non-peak times - i.e. before and after normal business hours. Also, burn these files to a CD-ROM so multiple machines can use the same file. This helps reduce the load on our Wide Area Network.)
Software issues on District owned machines can be reported to ITD. Contact the Help Desk at 323-224-2277 - Option 0.

Service Pack Issues
LAUSD Windows XP Service Pack 2 Information
Microsoft has released Windows XP Service Pack 2 for general distribution. Many computers on the District network will install this update automatically once it becomes available. If it is not automatically installed, ITD is recommending that you manually install this update so you can take advantage of the new security features it includes. (Our Software Information page has more information about how to Windows Update to keep your system current.)
Please read the information provided below to determine the impact it may have on certain applications used by the District.
Also, once you have updated Windows XP, it is recommended that you also update your Microsoft Office applications. (Our Software Information page has more information about how to update your Office products.)
The Windows XP Service Pack 2 update provides substantial security enhancements to the Windows XP Operating System. Most District applications have been tested with this Service Pack, and have no known issues. However, some of the security enhancements in the service pack have been found to interfere with certain District applications when installed with their default configuration.
NOTE: This update only affects workstations that use Windows XP Workstation (Home or Professional Editions). Workstations running Mac OS, Linux, or Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000 cannot install this service pack, and are unaffected by this change.
A summary of known issues with District applications and Windows XP Service Pack 2 are provided below. As the ITD helpdesk becomes aware of additional issues with other applications, instructions will be posted here.
KNOWN ISSUES: Online Progress Report (OPR), SOAR, and ESIS
Windows XP Service Pack 2 installs a "Popup Blocker" that blocks most pop-ups by default. These applications open popup windows during normal operation. In order to function correctly, users with Windows XP Service Pack 2 must disable the popup blocker for the OPR, SOAR and ESIS applications. Instructions for doing so may be found at: http://esis.lausd.net/winxpsp2.htm.
BRASS
The District BRASS application requires an updated version of the Citrix client to work with Windows XP Service Pack 2. A memo was sent to the users, advising on a new update they will receive when accessing BRASS. The new update will allow them to continue using BRASS with the current functionality. The update is a one time update they will receive the next time they access BRASS. Once a workstation has received the update, the BRASS application will operate normally with Service Pack 2.
Welligent (IEP)
Windows XP Service Pack 2 installs a "Popup Blocker" that blocks most pop-ups by default. These District applications open popup windows during normal operation. In order to function correctly, users with Windows XP Service Pack 2 must disable the popup blocker for the OPR, SOAR and ESIS applications. Instructions for doing so were sent to Welligent users through the application
Symantec Corporate Antivirus Versions 8.0.x
The District currently provides Symantec Corporate Antivirus software for all computers owned by the District and all computers owned by District employees. District employees are strongly encouraged to install and maintain this software on all machines in the District at all times. The current version of Symantec Corporate Antivirus software available from the District for Windows XP is 8.0.X This version may be downloaded from District sites from the link http://software.lausd.k12.ca.us.
District users may install Symantec Corporate Antivirus version 8.0.x from the District web site on a machine with Windows XP Service Pack 2 Installed. District users may also install Service Pack 2 on a Windows XP machine that already has Symantec Corporate Antivirus software installed. In both cases, the antivirus software will work normally. However, the Service Pack installs an advisory program called "Windows Security Center" on the workstation, which provides a summary of the machine's security settings. If a Windows XP workstation has Symantec Corporate Antivirus installed and the workstation is not attached to a Windows domain, the Windows Security Center will report the following under the "Antivirus" heading: “Symantec AntiVirus reports that it is installed, but its status is unknown. Click Recommendations for suggested actions you can take.”
If you receive this message, the Symantec Antivirus Software is installed and most likely working normally. However, it is not reporting its status to the Windows Security Center. Symantec has announced that they will release a fix for this issue in the next few weeks. The District will make the fix available to District users as soon as it is available and has been tested.
If you wish to remove the error message, you may perform the following actions:
In Windows Security Center, click "Recommendations" under the Antivirus section.
After clicking on Recommendations, the check box reads: “I have an antivirus program that I’ll monitor myself. Note: Windows won’t monitor your virus protection status and won’t send you alerts if it is off or out of date.” Check the box, and close the application. The error message will no longer appear.
ITD will continue to monitor District applications, and report further instructions as necessary to assure continued access. Please call the ITD Service Desk at (213) 241-5200 with questions related to this issue.

Software Usage and Installation Guide
The LAUSD License Agreement allows employees of the District to download a copy of NAV for use on home computers.

The Windows version of this software can be installed on earlier versions of the OS but note that only Windows 2000 and XP are supported by LAUSD ITD.
Windows Vista is currently still being tested for use on District computers. NO SUPPORT FOR WINDOWS VISTA IS PROVIDED AT THIS TIME. Another version of NAVCE will be available for download once Windows Vista has been approved for District use. Please note: The version available on this page does not support installation on Windows Vista machines.
Apple users, please note: Support for "Classic OS" versions are not supported by LAUSD ITD anymore. Customers are advised to upgrade to Mac OS X (10.4) and its supported hardware.

Also, schools should not install this software on their SSIS server. To have this software installed by an ITD technician on these computers, please contact the ITD Service Desk at 213-241-5200.
